Red Shield Youth Centers Celebrate with the Houston Astros

Jul 13, 2026

More than 430 young people from The Salvation Army Red Shield Youth Centers experienced an unforgettable day at the ballpark thanks to a wonderful partnership with the Houston Astros and the Astros Foundation. With transportation provided through 12 buses, youth from every Red Shield Youth Center came together for a day filled with fun, fellowship, and memories that will last a lifetime.

Each participant received a Houston Astros hat and enjoyed lunch together while cheering on the home team. The excitement reached a special high when some of our talented youth had the honor of singing the National Anthem, and all of the Red Shield Youth Center participants were recognized on the stadium Jumbotron, creating a moment of celebration for everyone in attendance.

This incredible experience was made possible through the generosity and support of the Astros Foundation. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Emelda Douglas, Executive Director of Astros Foundation, also a Salvation Army Houston Advisory Board Member and the entire Astros organization whose commitment to investing in young people helped make the day possible.

We also thank Advisory Board Member Vicki West, who joined Emelda in serving lunch to the children alongside dedicated volunteers, staff members, and our Area Commanders Captains Walker

The day was more than just a trip to the ballpark it was a reminder of what meaningful partnerships can accomplish. Through the support of community leaders and organizations like the Astros Foundation, our youth are given opportunities to create lasting memories, build confidence, and experience the joy of being celebrated.

Thank you to the Astros Foundation, Emelda Douglas, Vicki West, our volunteers, staff, and Salvation Army Officers for making this extraordinary day possible. Together, we are creating moments of hope and opportunity for the next generation.

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms. - 1 Peter 4:10 (NIV)
