Mr. Williams’ Journey with The Salvation Army
Mr. Williams was referred to The Salvation Army’s Diversion program after initially connecting with our Street Outreach team. He had been caught in a cycle of homelessness, living on a fixed income without family support or resources to improve his situation. With only $893 in Social Security benefits and $202 in food stamps per month, meeting his basic needs was a daily struggle.
However, Mr. Williams had recently been hired as a part-time security guard at Daiken Stadium, earning an additional $1,200 per month. His priority within the Diversion program became clear: improving his financial management skills to meet his basic needs and build a more stable life.
To get him started, his case manager provided work clothing through our partner agency, Clothed by Faith, ensuring he was presentable for his new job. Together, they created a monthly budget using a 50/30/20 Budget Calculator and Planner. This practical tool helped Mr. Williams understand his current income, plan for future expenses, and integrate savings into his routine.
Next, the focus shifted to finding stable housing. Barriers such as a criminal background, low income, and lack of transportation made this challenging. With guidance from his case manager, Mr. Williams explored Light Rail Lofts, a property that fit his budget, offered convenient public transportation, and worked with tenants despite past challenges. Acting as a mediator, the case manager helped him navigate the application process, ensuring all steps and documentation were completed, ultimately resulting in an approved application.
While working in his security position and adhering to his budget, Mr. Williams saved up to $400 ahead of his move-in date. With additional financial assistance for his security deposit, he successfully moved into his new unit on June 2, 2025. To support his continued self-sufficiency, the case manager referred him to The Salvation Army United Way Integrated Client Journey program, connecting him with additional resources and ongoing case management.
Many of the clients we serve are focused on surviving today, making it difficult to plan for tomorrow. Mr. Williams’ journey is a testament to self-determination and the power of support and guidance. With the tools provided through The Salvation Army, he is now better equipped to plan for a brighter and more stable future.
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)
