From Despair to Hope

For Dengelique, The Salvation Army Red Shield Youth Center is more than just a workplace—it’s a lifeline for her family. As both a dedicated staff member and a grateful parent, she has witnessed firsthand how the center provides a safe space for children, instills strong values, and fosters personal growth.

“For me, as a parent and also working at the same place my children attend after school and during the summer, we are grateful to have a safe nurturing place to go,” Dengelique shared. “The most important thing to me about The Salvation Army is that they build character. During COVID, we were home all day, and it was hard to socialize, but after the pandemic, The Salvation Army helped us reconnect with others who cared.”

Her youngest daughter Kayleigh 9 cherishes the fun activities, with dodgeball being her favorite, while her older daughter Chinira 16, has developed a deep appreciation for Camp Hoblitzelle. “Camp Hoblitzelle is a place where values and character are instilled in kids using scripture as the foundation. And it’s not just about faith—there’s also lots of fun things to do like swimming, fishing, horseback riding, zip-lining, and so much more.

Attending camp and worshiping has really helped her grow spiritually, especially since she hadn’t been in church for a long time.”

Dengelique's connection with The Salvation Army extends beyond the youth center.

The Angel Tree program provided much-needed support for her family during difficult times.

“There was a time I didn’t know how I would make Christmas special for my children, while i was working two jobs i was still coming up short. The Angel tree program has been a blessing. Not only for me but also seeing the joy on other parents’ faces as they picked up gifts for their children really warmed my heart.

“It was a blessing when we needed it most.”

As a staff member, she strives to create a nurturing environment for the children at the Red Shield Youth Center “School can be stressful, so we do our best to make the youth center a place where kids can relax and have fun. But beyond that, we focus on character-building because I know how important it is for them to carry a positive image in society.”

Reflecting on her journey, Dengelique is deeply thankful for The Salvation Army’s impact on her family. “During the storm, we had no power for days, and we felt hopeless. The Salvation Army provided us with food boxes and water—it was a huge help. I don’t have to pay for after-school care, and the organization’s moral standards make me feel safe knowing my children are in good hands.”

One of the most life-changing moments for her family was Chinira’s participation in the Youth of the Year Scholarship Program. “None of my kids have been able to attend college because we couldn’t afford it. But now, because of The Salvation Army, my daughter will be the first in our family to go to college.” Dengelique’s gratitude is immeasurable. “The Salvation Army has been a blessing to my family, providing opportunities we never thought possible. I am forever thankful!”
