Programs that Help
Dedicated to enriching the lives of the people we serve, The Salvation Army of Greater Houston's programs and services enable us to truly make a difference every day. No place is that mission more apparent than at our six Corps/Community Centers, our six residential complexes, our two stand-alone social services offices, our Upward Bound college preparation program, and in all the communities we serve in and around the Greater Houston region. These facilities deliver our brand of Doing The Most Good commitment to the various neighborhoods and communities we serve in Fort Bend, Harris and Montgomery counties.

Youth Programs and Boys & Girls Club

Locations

At our six Corps/Community Centers throughout the region children are offered a safe environment in which to explore and maximize their potential after school.  Our staff and volunteers serve as positive role models for these children, and provide them the leadership skills that parents have come to expect and appreciate from The Salvation Army.  Our Boys & Girls Clubs – at most of these community centers – offer fun recreational activities for our children to participate in.  From dance and music lessons, to Tae Kwon Do classes, and even special visits from local celebrities and sports teams, there is always a positive message to the work we do.  In the summertime, parents are also offered the opportunity to have their children participate in our summer camp program.

Upward Bound
& College Assistance

At the Boys and Girls Club at Lee High School, hundreds of first generation, low-income families are seeing a member of their family graduate from high school and go on to college for the very first time. By making a commitment to The Salvation Army's Upward Bound program, youth in the vicinity of the Houston Independent School District's Robert E. Lee High School are committing to reaching this accomplishment with the help of The Salvation Army's staff. Free of charge, these students are provided academic and career advising, financial aid assistance, a five-week summer program at Rice University, field trips to various other colleges, and assistance with college entrance requirements.

Senior Programs
Locations

Be it in the privacy of their own homes, at one of our six Corps/Community Centers, or at one of our two independent-living, residential apartment-buildings for senior citizens, the elderly in our community have found a safe haven at The Salvation Army.  Programs that deliver meals and friendly smiles offer solace to the homebound; those who are able to mobilize find a place of camaraderie and activity at our Corps/Community Centers, where they are also provided daily breakfast and lunch meals; those who are on a low income and need an affordable place to live, have made our William Booth and Evangeline Booth Garden Apartments true communities.  These residential living units charge rent on an income-based scaling system and afford our elderly the independence and dignity they deserve.

Shelters
Locations

For those without a place to call home, The Salvation Army many times means the difference between safety and danger. Women with children, for years, have been coming off the streets through The Salvation Army's Family Residence shelter for adult women with families. Located in downtown Houston, this facility not only offers them a place to live, but also the resources they will need to stay off the streets once they leave. A few blocks down, Sally's House (originally named after the slang word for The Salvation Army in the homeless communities throughout Houston) offers a transitional program for adult single women who are addicted to drugs and/or alcohol, and who are living on the streets. The Harbor Light Center and the Adult Rehabilitation Center – two more of The Salvation Army's rehabilitation facilities – help adult men overcome their addictions to drugs and alcohol, and provide them a transition out of homelessness. Each night in Houston at least 600 homeless people find shelter at one of The Salvation Army's facilities. During inclement weather, the Harbor Light Center opens its doors to all transients and does not refuse anyone. Because of the generous donations from our community all these programs and services are offered completely free of charge.

Rehabilitation
Locations

When an individual makes the decision to change their life and overcome their drug and/or alcohol addiction, many have found the faith-based rehabilitation offered by The Salvation Army a true salvation.  At no cost to the recovering addicted person, The Salvation Army provides them a place to live, life-building skills, instructional courses, emotional and spiritual support, and the tools they will need to move forward on their own.  The Harbor Light Center has created the critically acclaimed Harbor Light Choir from their current and former clients; Sally’s House and Family Residence have propelled dozens of women back into society as productive individuals; and the Adult Rehabilitation Center continues to change lives – as do all our Salvation Army programs and services.

Social Services

In trying times many turn to The Salvation Army for assistance in paying their utility bills and rent. During Christmas, hundreds of thousands of children and seniors in our community sign up for our Angel Tree Christmas assistance program to receive Christmas gifts. Providing social services is an important part of The Salvation Army’s mission to meet human needs without discrimination. These services are provided free of charge to those who qualify based on their income and individual needs. As a leader in offering community assistance, The Salvation Army works closely with our partner organizations to ensure all of our clients’ necessities are met.

Disaster Relief
& Emergency Response
Locations

When a natural disaster or sudden catastrophe causes social and personal chaos, The Salvation Army moves into action - often minutes after the tragedy has occurred - to meet the needs of the victims.  The Army's first priority is to meet the immediate needs of any victim or relief worker at the disaster scene without discrimination by supplying food, shelter and grief counseling.  The Salvation Army self-contained mobile feeding units are a familiar sight on the scene of any disaster.  These "canteens," which resemble United Parcel Service trucks, are equipped with all the conveniences of a modern-day kitchen and are operated by trained volunteers.  They are an important food source for victims and relief workers at the height of an emergency.  They can serve about 2,000 people a day from a single unit.
