This summer, global financial services
firm Morgan Stanley has partnered with The Salvation Army Boys &
Girls Clubs of Metro Houston to provide some 9,000 meals to area
youth participating in The Salvation Army’s Summer Day Camp
program. The international firm presented The Salvation Army
with a $60,000 donation to support its feeding efforts during
the busy summer months.
Each year The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Houston
hosts hundreds of children ages 5 to 12 at five area Clubs in
the Houston and Pasadena areas for their Summer Day Camp
program. Over 9,800 local children are being served through The
Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Houston.
“The reason we are doing this is quite simple. Faced with the
current economic challenges, many families are struggling to
provide their children with healthy meals. It is part of our
Firm’s culture to act when we learn that one out of six children
in the U.S. will not be getting enough to eat,” says John J.
Mack, Chairman and CEO of Morgan Stanley.
The Salvation Army Clubs offer baseball, basketball, flag and
tackle football, and soccer; as well after school programs that
include homework help, computer labs, drug and alcohol
prevention classes, arts and crafts, money management classes,
social and physical recreation. During the summer they offer
organized summer day camps including activities such as
swimming, field trips, field days, and much more. The Army also
offers a college bound program that helps students prepare for
their college experience.
“We are extremely grateful to the Morgan Stanley Foundation for
their generous support that will ensure the young people we
serve this summer will not go hungry,” adds Doug Smith,
executive director for The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs of
Metro Houston. “The economic downturn that has impacted the
entire country has been deeply felt by our Clubs, and many
summer food programs have been placed in jeopardy. Hopefully
others will follow Morgan Stanley’s lead.”
